Lineweight can be set as an object property or controlled when plotted by using a plot style. Lineweight settings in the plot style override the object's lineweight at plot time. When you select the Lineweight field in the Plot Style Table Editor, a sample of the lineweight as well as its numeric value are displayed. The default setting for plot style lineweight is Use Object Lineweight. You can modify an existing lineweight if the one you need is not available.To view plot style lineweights in a layout, select Display Plot Styles under Plot Style Table in the Page Setup dialog box. Tech is moving on and enough companies have sourced labour from 2nd to 3rd world countries to become competative that the companies you work for will have to adapt to survive. I've spent 20 years as a CAD technician and the past two years along with the next 2-3 are a crunch period where you either adapt or else. BIM (Building Information Modelling, which originated in America) is taking over. Governments see BIM as the golden egg, something that they can use to save costs while forcing the extra brainwork onto the designers. For 15 years I never had to use more than 50 layers.now it's more like 500 to 1000 and that's just in my discipline (highways).

Times are changing and it surprises me that USA based caddies don't see this.especially considering BIM originated in the USA military.Edit: I'm expecting downvotes here but seriously, learn about it and manage your decline or your ascent. I wish you all well.

Most companies use their own standards. I believe the most important thing is line weight. For my drawings colors=lineweight. Srs hd audio lab gold crackers.

Controlled through the.ctb what you dont want is your lines blending in with eachother. Walls should be the fattest lines, next doors/windows, cabinets, appliances, flooring. You want the reader to be able to look at your plans and clearly distinguish between different elements. As for the colors them selves its up to you. Again you want to be able to distinguish thing from eachother. I use color 31 for my walls set to.0170 lineweight this is also for layer 0 next is blue set to.0135, yellow at.0115, cyan at.0100, grey at.0080, red at.0060, green at.0040, magenta at.0015. Then i have a couple colors that will print in color for markups/changes/addendums.

170,230,50 & 70 all print in their color.
